Navadurga are nine forms of Goddess Durga in Hindu mythology. According to Hindu mythology, the nine forms are considered the nine stages of Durga during the nine day long duration of the war with Mahishasura. The nine forms of Durga are worshipped during nine days and these nine days are known as Navaratri. During the festival of Navaratri, nine unmarried virgin girls up to the age of nine years are worshipped and fed because they are considered to be the incarnations of these nine Goddesses. Shailaputri : Shailaputri is the first manifestations among the nine forms of Durga. The name Shailaputri literally means the daughter (putri) of mountain (shaila). Variously known as Parvati or Hemavati, the daughter of Himavat - the king of the Himalayas. She is adorned with light ornamentation on her limbs and was clothed in red and pink robes. She has two hands both holding a trident and lotus. She is seated upon the behind of a white bull. Maa Shailaputri is one of the Navadurgas and the provider of fortune and prosperity. Devotees hail her as mother nature and pray for their spiritual awakening. Additionally, the Goddess governs the Moon, provider of all fortunes. It is believed that any bad effect of the Moon can be overcome by worshipping her. She is the epitome of strength, courage and composure. The worship of Shailapurti on the first day of Navaratri is highly auspicious.
